Stamped & Decorative Concrete in Kokomo
Stamped concrete is ordinary air-entrained concrete with a pattern pressed in and color worked through it. In Kokomo the pattern is the easy part. Whether it still looks good after years of salt and freeze-thaw comes down to the mix, the joints and the sealer.

-
Random flagstone stamp
Irregular stones with deep grout lines. Forgiving of small joint cuts. Photo: gray release.
-
Flagstone in color
The same pattern with integral color and a darker release. Shows how much color changes the look.
-
Ashlar slate
Rectangles and squares in a repeating set. Reads "formal"; good next to brick.
-
Running bond brick stamp
Brick lines along a walk or as a border. Joints hide easily in the mortar lines.
-
Wood plank stamp
Boards with grain texture. Popular for patios off a deck; needs careful color work.
-
Seamless texture
Stone texture with no pattern lines. Quiet, and the easiest to keep clean.

Stamped Concrete Patio, Walk or Driveway: Where Stamping Works Here
Patios: the best fit
A stamped concrete patio gets foot traffic, not tires or plow blades, and no salt if you don't put it there. It's where stamping looks best longest. For sizing, slope and base, the plain-slab details are on our concrete patio page; this page covers the decorative layer.
Front walks and steps
Stamped walks and stamped concrete steps look sharp but get the most salt and ice. Use a texture with grip, a lower-gloss sealer with anti-slip grit, and a broom-finished or smooth-edged nosing on steps so heels don't catch.
Stamped driveways
Doable, but a stamped driveway takes the most punishment: tires, salt brine from Kokomo's streets, and a plow. It needs the full spec (air-entrained mix, joints in the grout lines) and resealing on schedule. For many houses, a plain drive with a stamped border or apron gets most of the look for less; compare with a standard concrete driveway.
Pool decks
Stamped concrete around a pool needs a cooler, lighter color and a textured, non-slick sealer. Pool chemicals and splash-out shorten sealer life, so plan on the short end of the resealing interval.
Decorative Concrete Finishes Compared
| Finish | Look | Traction | Upkeep in salt country | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Broom finish | Plain gray, straight texture | Good | Penetrating sealer every few years | Driveways, walks, budget patios |
| Exposed aggregate | Pebbles at the surface | Very good | Sealer optional; hides wear | Walks, drives, pool decks |
| Stamped, integral color | Stone, brick, slate or wood | Fair; add grit | Reseal every 2–5 years | Patios, borders, entries |
| Stained broom or smooth | Mottled or solid color | Depends on finish | Re-stain and reseal as it fades | Patios, covered areas |
| Stamped overlay | Pattern over old concrete | Fair; add grit | Like stamped; old cracks can return | Sound old slabs only, see resurfacing |
Exposed Aggregate Concrete: The Grippy Alternative
Exposed aggregate is made by spraying a surface retarder on the fresh slab. It delays the set of the top layer of cement paste while the concrete below hardens normally; the next day the paste is washed off, leaving the stones showing. Sika's data sheet puts the typical exposure at 3/8 to 1/2 inch.
It's the most slip-resistant decorative finish and hides tire marks and wear better than smooth stamped work, which makes an exposed aggregate driveway or walk a practical choice in an ice-and-salt town. The trade-offs: the retarder has to go on in the right temperature window (55–90°F for Sika's product) and never on a frozen surface, and the look depends entirely on the stone in the mix.

Where the color comes from
- Sealer
Acrylic is the most common outdoor choice. It keeps salt water out and holds the release color; reseal every 2 to 5 years.
- Stain (optional)
Goes on after curing. It's how faded stamped concrete gets its color back before resealing.
- Release agent
The powder or liquid that keeps the mats from sticking. It leaves a second, darker tone in the low spots. Powders give more color choice but make fine dust on the job.
- Integral color
Mixed into the whole load, so a chip or a scrape shows the same color underneath instead of gray.
- Stone base
No color here, but it's the layer that keeps the pattern from cracking out of line on wet clay.
Why sealing matters more in Kokomo
A sealer keeps salt water out of the surface and holds the release color. Kokomo's street crews cover 339 road miles in a storm, and that brine ends up on stamped drives and walks. Hose off the slush, skip deicers the first winter, never use magnesium- or ammonium-based deicers, and reseal when water stops beading.
| Decorative job | Published range |

| Stamped concrete patio, typical job | $2,961–$7,821 (average $5,319) |
| Stamped concrete per sq ft | $8–$28 |

| Sealer on new stamped work | +$0.10–$0.20 per sq ft |
Stamped Concrete Cost in Kokomo
The wide $8–$28 range is mostly pattern and color: one color with a single release on a simple rectangle sits at the low end; two-tone color, borders, steps and curves at the high end. Small patios cost more per square foot because the setup is the same.
The cheapest way to get the look is a plain slab with a stamped border. The most expensive mistake is skipping resealing to save money.
Stamped Concrete Contractors Near Me: What to Ask Before You Hire
- Can I see a stamped job that's at least three winters old? New stamped work always looks good.
- Where will the control joints go? The answer should be "in the grout lines of the pattern."
- Is the mix air-entrained? It should be, for any exterior slab here.
- Integral color, release, or both? And can I see a sample board, not just a brochure?
- What sealer, when, and who reapplies it? Get the product and the schedule in writing.
We're a general concrete contractor in Kokomo rather than a decorative-only shop, which means the slab under the pattern gets the same base, joints and mix as a driveway.
Stamped Concrete Questions from Kokomo Homeowners
Is stamped concrete slippery?
Sealed stamped concrete can be slick when wet or icy, especially in deep-textured, high-gloss finishes. An anti-slip additive in the sealer, a less glossy sealer, and more texture in the pattern all help. On steps and around pools it's worth the small extra cost.
How often does stamped concrete need resealing?
Typically every two to five years, sooner on driveways that see tires and salt. When water stops beading and the color looks chalky, it's time. Resealing is a cleaning and a fresh coat, not a big job, and it's the single biggest factor in how stamped concrete looks after ten Kokomo winters.
Does stamped concrete crack?
Yes, the same as any concrete. A good layout hides control joints in the pattern's grout lines so the cracks happen where you can't see them. A random crack through a stamped slab is harder to hide than one in a broom finish.
Can old stamped concrete be restained?
Yes. Faded stamped concrete can be cleaned, recolored with a penetrating stain or tinted sealer, and resealed, as long as the slab is sound. If it's scaling or cracked badly, restaining just colors the damage.
What is "pressed" or "embossed" concrete?
Other names for stamped concrete. Pressed concrete is the common term in the UK and Australia; it's the same process of pressing patterned mats into fresh concrete.
